Black Marlin Istiompax indica. An occasional visitor to the east coast of Tasmania, drawn south by the east Australian current. Driftwood and recycled copper pipe frame, eye by Melissa Pym. 240L, 80W, 20D (cm). Approximately 20kg.

Great White Shark

Carcharodon carcharias. Adult male; 320 cm long. Adult females can exceed 500 cm and 1.5 tonnes. Consider that for a moment. Driftwood body recovered by sea kayak. Celery Top Pine teeth. Modular construction, includes detachable head and fins. Can be wall mounted onto a solid beam. Approximately 60 kg. 2025.

Perched Owl

Endangered Tasmanian masked owl Tyto novaehollandiae castanops. Pairs for life, occupies a permanent territory and relies on hollows in old-growth trees for nesting and roosting. Threatened by tax payer funded logging of old growth forests in the triangular state. Driftwood and recycled Huon Pine, eyes by Melissa Pym. 17W, 70T, 54D (cm). 2025.

Octopus maorum. Named 'Marco Luciano Occhilupo' in honour of the Australian world champion surfer “Occy”. Constructed from a driftwood eucalyptus burl, with gumnut suckers. Eyes hand painted by Melissa Pym. 50W, 70L, 35H (cm). 2025

Wedge tail eagle

Aquila audax. King of Australian raptors and the heaviest of all the world’s eagles (up to 6 kg). Loves rabbits and roadkill, wind farms not so much. 80L, 45W, 33D (cm). 2023

Litoria burrowsae. A highly variable-coloured tree frog species from the mountains of western Tasmania. Driftwood and bones, eyes by Melissa Pym. 140L, 55W, 46D (cm). 2023.

Giant squid. Part of a large collage, hunting a sperm whale.

Tuna

Tuna

Thunnus alalunga. The wide-ranging albacore visits Tasmanian waters in summer and autumn. Fast, strong, beautiful and delicious. Extremely long pectoral fins. 110L, 30W, 15D (cm). 2022.

Smaug driftwoodensis. One for JRR Tolkien fans. Driftwood, recycled Huon pine, scallop shells and bone. 95L 56W 43D (cm). 2022.

Sea Dragon

Iconic marine fish species Phyllopteryx taeniolatus. Lives in Tasmanian coastal waters where it mooches about over weed beds eating zooplankton. Driftwood and kelp. 30L, 10W, 12D (cm). 2024.

Formed from a driftwood burl with one side positive, the other negative. Legs made of recycled copper welding nozzles, and plinth from recycled myrtle. 28T, 27L, 18W (cm). 2022.

Tail carved from a log of King Billy Pine. Features incredible grain and fiddleback. 45T, 35W, 17D (cm).

Platypus

Platypus

The universally loved oddball of Australian zoology Ornithorhynchus anatinus. An egg laying, semi-aquatic, poisonous, billed marvel of a mammal. 70L, 15D, 25W (cm). 2022.

Echidna

Echidna

Australia’s other egg laying monotreme marvel of a mammal. Hugely successful and widely distributed across most habitats in Tasmania and the north island. Loves a good ant. Walks with a rolling reptilian gait. Driftwood eucalyptus burl. 26L, 13T, 15W (cm). 2025

Ovalipes australiensis. Common along Tasmanian beaches where it occasionally bites swimmer’s toes. Carved from a recycled King Billy Pine window frame. 20cm wide. 2025.

A supernatural water spirit from Māori mythology. Lives in deep rivers, caves and the most dangerous parts of the ocean. Kelp tongue, fiddly fingers. 65W, 16T, 30D (CM). 2023.

Seal

Arctocephalus forsteri. The hound of the sea. Often popular with tourists and unpopular with local fishermen. Great white sharks love them. 100L, 100W, 25H (cm). 2024.
